The Oscars are introducing a new rule for voters and it’s one that you would have thought would have been a rule all along.
Effective immediately, The Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences announced in a press release that “In a procedural change, Academy members must now watch all nominated films in each category to be eligible to vote in the final round for the Oscars®. All designated nominees will also be included on the final ballot.”
I’m not sure how this hasn’t been a thing all along. How can you give an opinion for what is supposed to be the biggest night for movies? I mean, I do it all the time, but I’m not a voting member of the Academy. I was a voting member for the Juno Awards to send bands or musicians to the final ballot and even I had to listen to all the albums for the categories I helped out with.
They also announced some rules when it comes to AI and have said that robots can have feelings, too. The press release said, “With regard to Generative Artificial Intelligence and other digital tools used in the making of the film, the tools neither help nor harm the chances of achieving a nomination. The Academy and each branch will judge the achievement, taking into account the degree to which a human was at the heart of the creative authorship when choosing which movie to award.”
I guess if something is good, it’s good. But there is a big difference between human feeling and the feeling of a robot. Although this is a bit shocking, the fact that not every voter watched every movie is the biggest shock of all of this.
