Fat Bear Week Hits A Snag

Katmai National Park and Reserve in Alaska holds a contest every year, asking fans to vote for their favorite fat bear as they bulk up for winter hibernation. However, things took a morbid turn this week.

Two bears were seen fishing in the Brooks River on a livestream set up by Explore.org, when one of the beasts (Bear 469) attacked another (Bear 402), killing her and immediately eliminating some of his competition. Apparently, this is super uncommon among bears this time of year as most do not want to use energy as they bulk up for a long winters sleep. Kind of like when the remote is on the coffee table, but you’re stretched out on the couch watching football with a bowl of chips resting on your gut. It just isn’t worth it.

People are deeply saddened by this. Devastated in fact. Postponing the start of the annual contest. These people do understand that these are wild animals no? They kill each other all the time. This isn’t American Idol. Although, now that I think about it, it would have been pretty awesome to see Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken battle to the death.

Regardless, they’ve mourned enough and voting opens here today.
